Some Seriously Successful People from Moss Side

Darren Campbell is an inspirationa to say the least; making the journey from being raised by a single parent on a council estate to Olympic glory

Darren Campbell

Darren Campbell is quite an inspirational character to say the least; he made the journey from being raised by a single parent on a council estate in Moss Side to winning an Olympic gold medal.

Through hard work, dedication, courage and strength, he refused to let anything stand in his way. He has won relay golds at Olympic, Commonwealth and European level. That’s a seriously impressive feat, especially when you consider that he went through some considerable hardships growing up.

“My mum told me a story of how poor we really were,” he told Sky recently. “She said there was a point when she was on the dole, there was no money and she was washing toilets for £1 an hour.”

Brendan Loughnane

Loughnane is a role model for combat athletes and Mancunians alike. A former wrestling champion who is from Moss Side, he is trained to a high level in both Jiu-jitsu and boxing. Oozing confidence and self-control, he has emerged as one of the most exciting British MMA fighters in the past few years. In 2012, he reached the semi-finals of the UFC’s show ‘The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes’ and has also recorded big wins on Full Contact Contender, BAMMA, and Tanko Fighting Championships.

Danny Welbeck

Born in Longsight and later living in Moss Side, Welbeck has made his mark on English football. After using true grit and determination to work his way through the youth teams at Manchester United, he made his professional debut for them in 2008 and scored in the process.

He also played for United when they won the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2008-09 League Cup. In the 2011-12 season, he was a regular fixture in their first team before he was transferred to Arsenal in 2014 for a fee of £16million. He has done some great things for the England team too; making his debut in 2011 and going on to represent them at UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

 A Guy Called Gerald

A Guy Called Gerald, born and raised in Moss Side, is one of the most popular acid house DJs in the world. Once a member of house collective 808 State, he then went on to achieve massive success as a solo artist. His iconic track ‘Voodoo Ray’ was one of the best tunes to come out of the ‘Madchester’ scene and his 1995 album Black Secret Technology is considered one of the best jungle albums ever.
